Zoey Stevens has been drawing and painting longer than even he can remember. His mother Rita, an artist and actress, encouraged Zoey to draw as soon as he could by supplying him with sketch books, pencils and pens. By the time he was 7 years old Zoey realized he'd developed a talent because other children began asking him to do drawings for them. Star Wars was a common subject for many of his early drawings and a huge influence upon his life to this day. Cartoons , Kung-Fu movies, and the fantastic worlds & characters of JRR Tolkien stirred his imagination as well. Though he enjoyed a "celebrity status" amongst his friends & peers, not everyone appreciated his imagination and ability. In 8th grade Zoey received an F in art class for, "not following instructions". However, that same year, he also received a Merit of Achievement from the Orange Unified School District for his entry in a countywide student art exhibit.
It was in middle school that Zoey found his next major artistic influence in the emerging Hip Hop music culture. Not interested in the gangs or drugs, Zoey made his impact upon the local scene as an artist, airbrushing jackets for Break dancers, drawing party fliers and painting graffiti murals. Again, preferring acceptance over outlaw status, Zoey did most of his work with the permission of the property owners which allowed him to paint elaborate murals in plain view without any hassles. By combining his influences to create an artistic style of his own and by treating everyone, from gang members to school faculty, with sincerity & respect, Zoey was creating more than just a name for himself. He was creating a life for himself.
In July of 1988 Zoey was doing what most of us do in High School; whatever the hell we wanted to. By July 1989, in addition to establishing himself as an artist, he'd become a husband and a father as well. Faced with an entirely new host of joys and responsibilities, Zoey, his wife Jennifer and daughter Sable moved from their native Southern California to Duluth, Minnesota then Memphis, Tennessee. Eventually they settled in Orlando, Florida where Zoeys talents allowed him to support his family as a freelance scenic Art Director for many of the major theme parks and film studios concentrated in the area. Clients such as Disney, Seaworld, Nickelodeon, and Universal relied on ZoeyÕs skills for a wide variety of projects, from parade floats & movie sets to floor murals & ceiling tapestries. In addition to his "day job" Zoey also became very active in the local art community devoting his spare time to working with other artists in organizing co-operative shows, galleries and studios. All of this while supporting his family which had grown once again with the birth of their son (little) Zoey.
It was also in Orlando that Zoey developed his live painting performances for which he would become internationally known. It all started out on "Fetish Night" at a nightclub called The Edge, where he would take the stage in costume to brush and spatter the Go-Go dancers with fluorescent paint under the ultraviolet lights. The reaction of the club-goers was nothing short of overwhelming . Zoey knew that he'd hit the nail on the head and immediately took it to the next level by doing a "Give Kids The World" black tie charity event. The scale of his second performance required 14 professional dancers on a rotating stage and was thoroughly enjoyed by an audience of over 1,000. He was approached by an agent immediately afterwards and, at this point, has conceptualized and performed over hundreds of live paint shows. Zoey has performed for a wide variety of clients in almost every
major city in America, as well as internationally.
Today, Zoey and his family are living back in Southern California. Zoey continues to pursue his career as an artist. Having been commissioned by such collectors as Dennis Rodman, Howard Stern and Offspring drummer, Ron Welty. Zoey has also performed and appeared with Jay Leno, Richard Jeni and Former President George Bush Sr. among many other celebrities and corporate figures. Zoey continues to create works of art and is always developing new ways to enhance his live performance. As one of the most profound and prolific emerging artists
of today, Zoey will surely capture the attention of the world before and after he leaves it.
